No laboratory has published a measurement of Golden Teacher itself. The closest data point is a cross: Jack Frost × Golden Teacher contained 11.38 mg of tryptamines per gram of dried mushroom in a 2026 study, sixth of 14 strains grown under identical conditions. The reputation of Golden Teacher as a mild or medium strain comes from shops and users, and the shop descriptions contradict each other.
4.1The one measurement with Golden Teacher in it
In 2026 a group at the University of Haifa and Tel-Hai College grew 14 cubensis strains side by side, each in its own growth chamber on the same coco and vermiculite substrate, then dried, extracted and analysed them in the same way (Sharchaton et al., 2026). Golden Teacher itself was not among them. A cross of Jack Frost and Golden Teacher was.
| Strain | Total tryptamines (mg/g dry) | Psilocybin (mg/g dry) | Rank of 14 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mak IND | 20.65 | 19.60 | 1 |
| Penis Envy | 17.59 | 15.49 | 2 |
| Jack Frost × Golden Teacher | 11.38 | 11.03 | 6 |
| Jack Frost | 4.95 | 4.95 | 11 |
| Oak Ridge light | 2.62 | 2.03 | 14 |
The cross came out in the middle of the field. Almost all of its content was psilocybin; psilocin was low, at 0.15 mg/g. Jack Frost, its other parent, was grown in the same study and contained less than half as much.
What the table cannot tell you is how strong Golden Teacher is. A cross carries genes from two parents, and the result for the cross does not split neatly into a share for each. The honest reading is narrower: a line with Golden Teacher in its ancestry, grown under controlled conditions, landed near the middle of 14 strains.
4.2How much one mushroom differs from the next
The same study measured five single mushrooms from several strains separately. The coefficient of variation for psilocybin, a measure of spread, was 12.8 to 23.4 percent between mushrooms of one strain grown in the same chamber. An earlier study of five other strains, which did not include Golden Teacher, found that results became more precise when several mushrooms were ground together before analysis (Goff et al., 2024).
In practice: a gram taken from one mushroom and a gram taken from another can differ noticeably, even within one kit.
4.3Flushes and storage
Two more factors move the numbers. Psilocybin can vary by up to a factor of four between flushes of the same culture, and psilocin tends to rise over the first four flushes (Bigwood and Beug, 1982). Storage matters as well. A Czech study of cubensis biomass found the largest losses in fresh mushrooms kept frozen at minus 80 °C and the smallest in dried material kept in the dark at room temperature (Gotvaldová et al., 2021).
A comparison between cultivars that ignores the flush and the storage is partly a comparison of those two.
4.4What the numbers mean in a gram
The range in the 14-strain study helps to show how little a strain name pins down. One gram of dried mushroom at the lowest value in that study contains about 2.6 mg of tryptamines; at the highest, about 20.6 mg. The cross with Golden Teacher sits at about 11 mg per gram. Add the spread between single mushrooms and between flushes, and two portions of the same weight can differ by a factor of two or more.
That is why the Trimbos Institute calls it difficult to judge how much is needed (drugsinfo.nl), and why weight is only a rough guide. Lesson 5 covers what this means for safety.
4.5What the shops say
Shop descriptions of Golden Teacher's strength are claims without published test results, and they do not agree:
- Dutch-Smart's XXL kit page says Golden Teacher gives "a more intense trip" than the Colombian and Ecuadorian cultivars. (shop claim)
- Dutch-Smart's Royale Flush page rates its potency as "Medium" and the effects as "mild to moderately intense". (shop claim)
Both may reflect what customers report, and both are compatible with the one measurement above. Neither is a measurement. The widespread description of Golden Teacher as a mild beginner's strain belongs in the same category: a reputation, repeated often, never tested against other cultivars in a published study.
?Review questions
Answer for yourself first, then open the answer.
-
Has Golden Teacher itself been measured in a published study?
Answer No. The only published measurement involves a cross, Jack Frost × Golden Teacher, at 11.38 mg of tryptamines per gram of dried mushroom.
-
Can you work out the strength of Golden Teacher from the result for the cross?
Answer No. A cross combines two parents, and its result does not split into a share for each.
-
Name three reasons two portions of the same weight can differ in strength.
Answer Differences between single mushrooms, between flushes, and in how the mushrooms were stored.
-
Is "medium potency" on a product page a lab result?
Answer No. It is a shop claim; another page from the same shop calls the cultivar more intense than two others.
